The Uranus-Pluto Saga Continues: Individual Threads of the Collective Tapestry

This week two of the personal planets, namely Mars and Mercury, come to exact aspect with two powerhouse outer planets: the divine trickster, Uranus, and also deeply transformational Pluto. This is symbolic of the multitude of ways in which the strands of our individual selves weave into the tapestry of our collective human consciousness. Uranus and Pluto have been enacting their storied square alignment since at least the beginning of this current decade, which speaks to the cultural evolution that we find ourselves in the midst of.

In the week of October 15-22, this configuration is getting stirred up in a big way as active Mars comes into conjunction with Pluto at 15º Capricorn, while mental Mercury forms an opposition with Uranus and Eris, representing uniquely individual attainment of soul intention. Mercury and Mars move far more quickly through the zodiac than the outer planets do, and are referred to as personal planets; they have a correlation to the collective, but tend to represent aspects of self and interpersonal relations. We can see Mars’ visit with Pluto as activating issues with unconscious power imbalances and deep seated rage, but also as presenting an opportunity to call upon a more beneficial inner warrior nature. There may be events that test the strength of our individual will to set appropriate boundaries, enunciating that bottom line where things beyond that point are not OK, prompting us to look deep within and aim our intentions towards actively creating a better world.

Mercury opposite Uranus and Eris represents the glaring and shocking ways in which outer events are begging for our conscious mind to stop and really look and pay attention. We each hold a precious and unique genius and gift, and life is asking us to step up and bring forth the fullest expression of ourselves. As we come to recognize and honor our own true nature as Divine Creators, we can, in turn, recognize this presence more readily in others when it appears. As we do, scarcity transforms into abundance, struggle into thriving, anger into positive impact, judgment into compassion, and fear into love.

Pluto moving through Capricorn has symbolized a long and profound process of deep excavation, transformation, and restructuring. As the old ways of being that have become outworn fall away, we find ourselves standing amidst the rubble, when the only thing to do is to start over and build again. The new foundation will be one where the paramount factors become sustainability, personal responsibility, and alignment with a higher good. Uranus in Aries provides the necessary shocks and shake-ups to pave the way for unhealthy patterns to unravel themselves and through the fortification of our Will be rewoven into a more coherent and harmonic tapestry.

These two outer planet energies of Uranus and Pluto have been and will be closing in and fading out of square aspect to one another this entire decade, which I have at times referred to as the decade of the "Turbulent Teens." This is not a pretty or neat process. It’s messy. It’s frightening. It’s confronting. We are being forced to come to know ourselves in this place. How do we respond when faced with the darkest and scariest parts of our nature? How do we manage to keep our heads on straight and stay sane through crisis, and amidst these times of deep uncertainty?

Two ideas come to mind: one is born out of the more ordinary phrase “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.” Then there is also the famous line attributed to Ghandi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Neither one of these is adequate without the other. The challenge, and opportunity, is to harness the fuel generated by our outrage, calling upon our Higher Self to create positive change and impact in our world, both personally and collectively.
