Solstices & Equinoxes

The solstices and equinoxes are foundational to Western astrology. They are the anchor points around which the year turns and mark the transitions between seasons. The zodiac is organized around these four turning points, dividing the year into equal sections and aligning the movement of the Sun with changes in the light and in nature.

Each of these days coincides with the Sun’s entry into a Cardinal sign—Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. The word “cardinal” comes from the Latin cardinalis, meaning “serving as a hinge,” reflecting the role these signs play as pivot points in the solar cycle. They mark the beginnings of light waxing or waning—times when the ratio of daylight to darkness shifts direction, reminding us of the cyclical rhythm that shapes each year.
