An Intense, Interesting and Hopeful September

The Astrology of September features Mars, Chiron, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The forming square of Uranus and Pluto that has been with us all spring and summer makes another exact hit this month, with both planets this time in retrograde motion, and as the lunations from the end of August and the middle of September provide triggers for their action. Neptune is also powerfully activated this month as well, being square the nodal axis and aspected by the lunations.

The Full Moon from the last day of August, the so-called "Blue Moon" because the second Full Moon of the month, a relatively rare occurrence, took place in Virgo and Pisces, with the Sun and Moon closely aspecting these three powerhouse outer planets, and with the Moon conjunct Chiron. Mars in Scorpio was closely in trine to Chiron/Neptune, quincunx Uranus and sextile Pluto, thus providing an interesting staging ground for the current month.

In September, at the moment of the mid-month New Moon in Virgo, Mars makes an exact septile to Pluto, while the Sun and Mercury aspect Uranus. The Fall Equinox taking place on Saturday, September 22nd, also represents an important juncture, and one which activates Neptune along with Uranus and Pluto.

All three outer planets are therefore highlighted once again, this month, just as they have been all summer. We have a confluence of archetypal forces of transformation coming down upon us, acting on behalf of the cosmos as they encourage us to rise to the occasion, stepping up to the place where we can see our evolutionary necessity lie clearly before us. As the spectacle of the summer Olympics reminded us, we too can be heroes. When we feel that we have done all that we can do to become the men and women that we know that we were all along meant to become, then we can rest easy in our slumbers — and on the laurels of our fully earned humanity.

The Sabian symbol for Uranus, in the mystical seventh degree of Aries, is "A man successfully expressing himself in two realms at once." This describes the dilemma of the human condition, caught between the ordinary and that which transcends it, and expressing as well the collusion between those numinous inter-dimensional spaces beyond the physical, contrasted with the practical and mundane side of life. The symbol for Pluto in the seventh degree of Capricorn is "A veiled prophet of power," which also speaks to this important distinction and to our difficulty in fully understanding the numinous realms that form the background for everything that we are.

The action of Uranus and Pluto is truly revolutionary, both within the sphere of worldly affairs, as we can see all around us, and within the spiral pathway of our own lives as well, as we stretch ourselves to reach for what was previously beyond us.

Neptune in Pisces, also prominent, remains widely squared by Jupiter through the first half of the month, reminding us that we are made of the stuff of imagination and in one sense live in an imaginary world. But this also means that we can remake that world by a shift in how we see it.
