A January Month of Polarity, Relationship Transformation, and Inner Recognition

This January month features a potent opening weekend with the Capricorn New Moon on the 2nd in trine with the trickster archetype of Uranus. Because Uranus is still square to Saturn, representing a long-term theme of the previous year that is still active heading into 2022, the potent push-pull between conservative and progressive viewpoints continues to incite. This will play out as a strong role this month, both in individual ways and as reflected in the stark political divides characterizing the larger collective. We do though have to give progressive Uranus extra credit during this powerful month, because of the trine from Sun and Moon in the New Moon timing, and also due to the square that Uranus receives from Mercury as it stations retrograde in the sign of Aquarius on the 14th. The Mercury Retrograde period can last five weeks or more when you take the extra two weeks of Mercury’s retrograde shadow period into account, so it is best to remain introspective, to watch and to wait, choosing not to “push the river” until after mid-February. With Uranus so prominent, unexpected events and ideas continue to surprise us, and to provide us with unique realizations.

Along with the prominent themes outlined above we also have the Venus retrograde period that began on the 19th of December, in conjunction with Pluto in Capricorn, and continued through the holiday season. This signaled relationship changes, continuing in January. In the current month, Venus remains retrograde throughout, still in various ways making a chime with transformational Pluto. There are also therefore available in this January month strong indications for relationship transformation of all kinds, including the metamorphosis taking place within the depths of each of our own psyches.

As the January month continues to unfold, there is another hugely transformational moment with the Cancer Full Moon of Monday, January 17th. This is due to the Full Moon in late Cancer is opposed to the Sun in Capricorn in close conjunction with Pluto. The middle of January, then, with the Mercury station of the 14th and this dynamic Full Moon, will be a significant time for reassessing where in fact you are, and where you are heading, in this new month and year.

As the year gets going there is also to consider the impact of new planetary archetypes beyond Pluto that I have been researching. These officially named planets, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake, have been proven quite significant in charts. Eris has been prominent all last year by remaining in close square with Pluto, and can be characterized as a Feminine Warrior energy for articulating and acting upon your deepest principles, while Haumea and Makemake represent different aspects of profound connection to Nature, and to natural law, elements of right action and right relationship that are vital to the emerging cultural evolution of this 21st century. These latter two are emphasized in the current month, with Makemake remaining exactly opposite to Chiron, the Wounded Healer, while Haumea is triggered by the Cancer Full Moon. It is clear that issues of our connection to Nature such as dealing with climate change will continue to arise ever more urgently in the coming month, and in the 2022 year. Recent weather extremes have wreaked havoc in nearly all parts of the United States, for example.

Our beleaguered planet needs our human help, here in this second decade of a pivotal new century, and it seems more and more clear that a change in consciousness is the necessary pre-condition for that help beginning to arrive. In addressing this necessary rise in consciousness, I believe that Astrology can represent a fundamental building-block in the formation of a new and more vital society that is trying to emerge through the difficult and chaotic times we are currently living through.
