A Feisty New Moon

Friday evening's New Moon makes some important waves. Even though taking place in peaceful Libra, this configuration packs a real punch, with nearly all of the outer planets powerfully aspected. Take a look at this star-studded cast of characters: we find the New Moon itself, in the twelfth degree of Libra, almost exactly opposite the trickster energy of Uranus, across the Zodiac in the eleventh degree of Aries. Pluto makes a square to both, from the tenth degree of Capricorn. Uranus has been closing on the next exact hit of his truly revolutionary combination with transformational Pluto, due by month's end. Meanwhile, Saturn, representing earthy structure and maintaining the status quo at all costs, resides in the eleventh degree of Scorpio, Pluto's sign, where it makes a sextile to Pluto and a quincunx to Uranus. This is quite an interesting and even a scary soup of energies, indicating that this weekend's cosmic weather, and for the month in general, tends toward the extreme and the challenging. This energy is also productive of meaningful change.

We can see a rather intense degree of polarization reflected in the current national and world headlines. The potential for yet another mid-east war looms, while the United States government is shut down due to the failure of the twin parties to come together and, well, govern. The debt ceiling stand-off that comes up in two weeks is another chance for these extremely polarized forces to find compromise, saving untold billions in consequences if a workable arrangement is arrived at, or costing that much and more by ruining the American nation's already shaky credit rating. In a striking chime with the astrological symbolism of Saturn, Uranus and Pluto, it is becoming increasingly obvious that actual structural changes are not only desirable but urgently required.

In our own individual lives as well, the same story is unfolding, for each of us is a microcosm for the whole. Surely there are situations with each one of us that we have long looked toward transforming and yet, somehow, have put off dealing with. This New Moon carries the message that time is indeed running out. It is not impossible to correct existing situations that have gotten off track; the universe is ever our friend. But the hour is indeed growing late for getting started.

Chiron, the Wounded Healer, also makes a cameo appearance in this outer planet arrangement, being located in the eleventh degree of Pisces, so that it makes a sextile aspect to Pluto and a trine to Saturn. This is a signal that the pain is great of transforming what we have grown accustomed to in our lives, as dysfunctional as that status quo might be, and as obviously so by this point in time. It is becoming more and more clear that the pain of doing nothing could become even greater, so that action is indeed inevitable. This is so however much the spoiled child within all of us might be skilled at throwing a tantrum or engineering a shutdown.

With Mars in dynamic aspect to Pluto and square to Venus, we also must beware of reactivity in our dealings with others. We are under such extreme pressure to transform in our own lives, that it is more than possible that the resulting angst will be projected onto others around us, causing additional pain and suffering before we realize what we have done. It is a good recommendation that you count to ten and breathe deeply before saying something that you might later have cause to regret.

There is trouble brewing, that's for sure. But we, as always, have recourse in our ability to step up to the challenges that we face. The Sabian Symbol for this New Moon degree is "Miners emerging" and we might take this symbol to heart. After digging down to explore our true motivations, and attempting to understand ourselves at the deepest possible level, we may yet escape.
