A December Month of Angst, Optimism, and Increased Clarity

December began astrologically with the late Scorpio New Moon from back in mid-November, which inspired and governs the thirty-day lunation cycle covering the first nearly three weeks of the current month, ending as the next New Moon cycle begins, on the 19th. This November event was another dynamic New Moon, at 28° of Scorpio, therefore still closely aspecting Pluto and Uranus in their out-of-sign trine, as well as Neptune at 29° of Pisces right on the very edge of Aries. When so close to the next sign in the Whole Sign system, planets are said to affect both their own sign and the 0° boundary of the next. We also have an emphasized presence of the long-lasting positive trine between optimistic and expansive Jupiter with the contractions and limitations symbolized by Saturn. The upshot is that we still have this month a very dicey outer planet set of alignments, with the recent New Moon exactly opposed to trickster Uranus at the edge of the Gemini sign thus presaging further surprise events and thought process on both individual and collective levels, which might yet give rise to unexpected enlightenment. Note that this does take remaining as open as you can to unusual information from a potentially intuitive source. There are also a ton of synchronicities piling up, including this one (in the sky): The recent New Moon was in the same exact timing as the Mercury Cazimi moment, a conjunction of Mercury and Sun within a quarter of a degree, which might therefore last into December with its reputation for unexpected clarity of thought, hinting of unexpected and at least partial solutions to our many difficult issues that we as a society are currently navigating.

There is as well in this month’s astrology an indication of the importance now of inner work, with that prominent position of Neptune casting an ethereal glow over everything. Another indication of internal delving down into our very depths, below the level of consciousness, is the prominence of Chiron, the Wounded Healer, in close conjunction with Eris, thus emphasized, and additionally activated in the Full Moon of December 4th. In this Full Moon configuration, we find Chiron at 22° of Aries while Mars at 22° of Sagittarius is in partile or same-degree trine with Chiron, plus we have Jupiter in Cancer in close square while the Gemini Moon lies in septile. In the late Sagittarius New Moon from December 19th, Chiron-Eris is also highlighted. That’s a lot of Chiron, and we benefit when we can take advantage of this opportunity to become better acquainted with these neither regions of the psyche where the inner wounding represented by Chiron resides. These painful and isolated parts within us are the residue of the traumas of early childhood when they were not able to be handled and were walled away as too painful at the time to be integrated with our conscious understanding. We may in fact tend to avoid going there even as adults, concerned with feelings of unworthiness and shame, and this lack of simple acceptance is what we have the ability to change as more consciously aware and centered beings. Inner wounding during the December month will thus likely arise. When we can meet that situation with, instead of avoidance, cautious acceptance, and give welcome to the lost and lonely child complex within us that they actually represent, we will have made an important turning and a good move toward integration and eventual healing.

The late Sagittarius New Moon of the 19th is at 28° of the sign and is therefore again quite close to 0° of the next sign, in this case, Capricorn. For a Capricorn emphasis, there is also Mars, now in Capricorn and in close aspect to the new 21st century planet Haumea, indicating a focus on internal moral compass, increasingly significant in this age of political spin. There is always the counter of a deep-seated and perhaps hidden awareness of what is actually the right thing to do. Chiron is again emphasized, so that inner wounding, and our reactions to it, continues to play an important part in the final ten days of December.

The ingress of Mars, followed by the Sun and Venus, into Capricorn, throughout the month, is in each case preceded by that planet being in close square with Neptune in the days before the ingress, also squaring Saturn nearby. These squares of personal planets to Saturn, and then Neptune, bring a sense of finality to the progress of this month, indicating that important moments of personal transformation are involved.

This December month, while tending at times toward optimistic outlooks, plus mental and moral clarity, does continue the series of intense planetary configurations that we have seen over these last five or six months. With all the current angst and lack of steady compass, we may be tempted to despair ever finding our way out of the maze. The good news is that “what doesn’t kill us” might still, after all, make us stronger to face what these times call for as needed to face. And that, when we can muster our most profound courage, might indeed be enough to see us through.
