An October Month of Relationship Issues and Solitary Transcendence

An October Month of Relationship Issues and Solitary Transcendence

This October is another month for us that has quite the irony of paradox on offer, as well as the outer planet combinations of transcendent energy that has been true of all these previous summer months. Because of the season, the powerful positioning of Pluto and of Neptune seems especially apt, along with the concept of the thinning of the veils between this life and the other-dimensional reality that is equally our human, all too human, birthright. In the midst of the physical 3D reality that we can touch, see, and taste, there lies the barely known and largely secret realms of the transpersonal, symbolized in Western astrology by Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, the ambassadors, perhaps, of all those little-understood dimensions beyond three or four. In the Virgo New Moon eclipse from the last part of September, governing the first twenty days of the current month, and taking place at 29° of the Virgo sign, there is an out-of-sign grand trine from the eclipse degree to the storied, rebellious, and transformational planet pairing of UranusPluto, in partile trine at the beginning degrees of Gemini and Aquarius, lighting the way to further deep-seated changes for us all, both individually and in terms of the collective. Meanwhile, Neptune at 0° of Pisces additionally participates, lying at the midpoint of the Uranus-Pluto trine and in close conjunction with Saturn, which in contrast with Neptune is instead closely associated with mundane physical reality.

Because the eclipse degree of 29° Virgo represents, once again, an extreme trigger for all three outer planets, at 0° or 1° of their respective signs, we are still in for the episodes of transformational change and novel insights that have been with us for many weeks, now. This includes spiritual realizations, and ways to understand that we simultaneously and paradoxically occupy physical 3D reality and also the mystical regions of the soul, beyond the physical. This is our birthright, and if we ignore either one of these realities, we are in danger of abandoning the elements that make us human. Too much dependency on the rational – to the exclusion of the mystical – has very nearly destroyed our present-day Western culture, and it is going to take a lot of tough sledding to get us back from the brink, as is becoming increasingly obvious to anyone paying attention.

The recent late-Virgo eclipse is one very important factor in our current astrology and there are others. In the timing of the Aries Full Moon of October 6th, for another example, we find that Jupiter in Cancer, where Jupiter is extra-potent, at 23° of the sign, is closely square to a conjunction of Eris and Chiron at 25° of Aries. This is a lot of Chiron and symbolizes ancient wounding coming up hopefully for adjustment and healing. This includes, in particular, wounds of belief and spirit, as Jupiter square Chiron symbolizes. We must – in the face of this belief wound – rally around new models of Spirit that take us further toward where we need to go, rather than away from that important and significant internal space. In this aspectual configuration, Eris, Feminine Warrior in support of soul intention, being quite a force of deep-seated awareness and sustenance, enhances this JupiterChiron interaction that pops up directly in the timing of the Aries Full Moon.

The Moon’s Last Quarter comes along a week later into the October month, on Monday the 13th, and is accompanied by Venus crossing into Libra, which sign she rules, there opposing Neptune at 0° of Aries, and by Pluto’s station to direct motion at 1° of Aquarius, trined by the position of Venus which also trines Uranus at 0° of Gemini in another grand trine in Air. This is another quite significant configuration of illusion, spiritual vision, and intuitional knowledge combined with clear thinking, and of the transformational effectiveness of the powerfully positioned Pluto, all affecting the places where we visualize the future and have our relationships. This timing has the factor as well of the Moon in closing square to the Sun, the lunar phrase that noted 20th century humanistic astrologer Dane Rudhyar referenced as a “crisis of consciousness.” Indeed, in these fractious times of societal change we all have the responsibility to become as aware as possible of what is really going on, within us and outside of ourselves in the so-called “real” world. The world is of course actually in one sense very real, or at least as real as our thoughts allow it to be.

On Tuesday the 21st, we have the late Libra New Moon at 28° of the sign, with the Sun and Moon square Pluto, opposed to Chiron- Eris, quincunx Uranus in Gemini, and square Jupiter. In this New Moon as well, Mercury and Mars meet in a perfected conjunction. This is another very powerful New Moon, guaranteeing that we will have further transformational intensity on the menu as October comes to its ending and November gets going. The last major configuration of the October month being a grand trine in Water between Mars in Scorpio, which he rules, Jupiter exalted in Cancer, and Saturn in Pisces. This represents an emotional finale to the October month, perfecting in the First Quarter Moon of the 29th, which has the benefit of the softer trine aspects, and yet which also signals a divisive timing for ideas and actions potentially in conflict.

These are difficult times, and it is a major challenge to stay true to ourselves and to our most cherished inner principles and values; and yet this is where we must go, and be firm in doing so. We might recall the words of Margaret Mead and take courage in them and in the strength of our own convictions: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
