A Full Moon of Introspective Disclosure

A Full Moon of Introspective Disclosure

Thursday, November 22nd is Thanksgiving Day, here in the United States at least, and is the night of the Gemini Full Moon everywhere. This is a late evening phenomenon on the west coast and an early morning event the next day for the east coast and Europe. Because the Sun in the first degree of Sagittarius is conjunct unrestrained Jupiter, this is an extremely optimistic and expansive time; and yet it is also introspective one, not fully of the 3D material world, because Mercury is now in retrograde in this same sign of Jupiter’s rulership. The Moon in Gemini is also notably ruled by this backwards-running Mercury. We will want to remember also that Mercury was in precise square with numinous Neptune at the moment of its turning, last week on the evening of November 16th. This otherworldly beginning actually colors the entire retrograde, which is therefore likely to be an unusually strong Mercury Retrograde period. In addition to the Gemini, Sagittarius and Piscean energies that are highlighted in this Full Moon, there is also a very strong Aries-Libra component. A slow moving Venus, a week into recovery from her own recent retrograde, is in partile conjunction to the new planet, Haumea, within mere minutes of a degree, at the 26-degree mark of diplomatic and peace-loving Libra, and is opposed within a quarter of a degree by the Eris-Uranus midpoint at 26:18 of Aries. This is a very strong configuration, redolent of an action orientation in favor of departures from a pre-existing and potentially outmoded status quo, and in search of spiritual and diplomatic solutions more consistent with Natural Law. As I mentioned with the New Moon, the battle continues, but there is at least some movement now toward a more subdued level of vitriol, and a greater unification of understanding between the polarized parties.

In addition to the inherent difficulties and the inward-turning that is indicated by this particularly powerful Mercury Retrograde – possessing, as indicated above, a decidedly Neptunian component derived from its begin point on November 16th — this Full Moon configuration also features a close parallel between retrograde Mercury and Saturn. The Saturnian archetype is to go slow and then still slower, inhibiting progress but allowing for long-lasting lessons to emerge out of solving the problems that arise. This is on one hand a further indication of a rather difficult Mercury Retrograde period for the remainder of the month and into December, and on the other an admonition that you pay the closest possible attention to everything that is going on within you and outside of yourself. You will be just fine when you take things slowly, and with attention, maintaining the attitude that everything that happens could be construed as a message or a lesson for the future.

This Full Moon also has a strong square alignment between Mars in early Pisces and Jupiter in Sagittarius. This is of course antithetical to the signals stemming from strong Saturn, and implies instead embracing a philosophy of “move fast and break things.” Again, the advice would be to take into account these astrological indications as you navigate the tricky waters of these next two weeks, recognizing that there may be a tendency to take unnecessary risks or to go off half cocked, and attempting to intentionally slow down.

The strong presence of Uranus/ Eris across the zodiac from Venus-Haumea might also give us some ideas for how to handle our ideas and aspirations moving into December and the ending of the year. We are enjoined to take our startling individuality (Uranus) quite seriously, and to look upon it as an asset and not a concern. We must take ourselves and our deepest values as a work in progress, dependent on no one’s ideas but our own, and act upon these beliefs in everything that we do ( Eris) forcefully as necessary, letting nothing deter us. As we do, we are embracing the power of Nature and of the Universe to come to our aid, recognizing that we are on an essentially spiritual quest for purpose and for meaning, and that we are all in this together (Venus-Haumea).

The Sabian symbols for this Full Moon are, as usual, of great interest. They are, for the Sun in the first degree of Sagittarius, “A Grand Army of the Republic campfire.” This symbol refers to an organization of civil war veterans, still current in the 1920s when these symbols were created, and is thus often modernized as “Army veterans reminisce.“ That there is mention of a campfire is startling to our 2018 ears, because we are seeing this just as the most deadly wildfire in California history, called the “Camp Fire,” has only quite recently concluded. One positive note amidst all the death and destruction of this tragic event has been a greater recognition of the environmental slow-moving death spiral being caused by “global warming,” a phrase that is now on everyone’s lips as the world surveys the terrible scene. This important recognition refers back to these two new nature planets that are so prominent in this Full Moon, Haumea and Makemake, and indeed in the entire 30-day cycle originating November 7th as I have been describing. That a gathering of war veterans is indicated in this symbol also lets us know that a battle is at hand, and that community will be involved in dealing with it, even global community. Marc Edmund Jones remarks upon the desire of mankind “to live worthily as a basis for present or future well-being,” and also upon “the cultivation and preservation of enduring ties with others.” For the Moon, in the first degree of Gemini, we find, “A glass-bottom boat in still water,” an apt symbol for the Mercury Retrograde period with strong Neptune, when we are encouraged to look deeply inside ourselves to observe the strange creatures on display within us. Jones references one’s “alertness to every ramification of experience open to him [or her] and of the necessity that one take definite action on his [or her] own account in order to capitalize on any particular opportunity.” Indeed we must all recognize that every experience of life and living, when we look at it right, is productive of an endless stream of possibilities for ourselves, and for coming to a greater understanding of our purpose in being here at this particular moment of history.
