The Virgo New Moon, at 0° of the sign, arrives on August 22nd, 2025, at 11:07 PM Pacific Time, signaling a potent threshold moment. The Sun and Moon at 0° 23’ Virgo not only meet at the very beginning of Virgo, a sign known for its discerning eye and devotion to refinement, but they also find themselves in tight aspect with every outer planet at 1°: Pluto at 1° Aquarius, Uranus at 1° Gemini, and Neptune at 1° Aries, there additionally conjoined with Saturn only a degree away. With so many planets perched at this one-degree mark, and this potent New Moon at 0°, the current energetic landscape may feel confronting and difficult – although not entirely unfamiliar, since this whole summer summer has been like that – but definitely quite intense. And yet this New Moon, and the lunation cycle that is initiated here, lasting through two-thirds of September, also hums with potential for breaking stagnant patterns and forging new pathways, as we also have the upcoming Eclipse Season to reflect upon. This very dramatic August New Moon opens the gateway and sets the tone for what is to land upon us in the coming weeks.
To reflect on how to meet this moment, let’s begin with Virgo, the maiden of the harvest and an archetype of refinement and service. Too often reduced to clichés of perfectionism or rigid order, Virgo carries a deeper symbolic role. At its core, this archetype is about discernment and tending to details – not just for their own sake but in service of something greater. In the analogy of the harvest, the Virgoan eye searches for the tiniest imperfection among the grain, a spot of mold, a trace of rot, as an act of service and care for the whole. The food stores must last the winter, and the smallest oversight could risk the well-being of the entire village. This analogy can be translated to our lives as we tend with care to the details, in service to something greater. With the New Moon at the first degree of Virgo, we may be shown something new about our relationship to this archetypal principle.
This is a uniquely potent Virgo lunation. Motion and change are the hallmarks of this year’s astrology, and this New Moon chart is emblematic of that. What we have now is a very rare configuration, with the Sun and Moon and all the outer planets currently occupying the first or second degree of their signs. This may signify that we are collectively standing at the threshold of entirely new cycles. The trine and sextile alignments thus created, and the yod to the New Moon degree itself from Neptune–Saturn and Pluto, suggest that the changes arriving now are complexly engaged with the broader metamorphosis of humanity and our world. Pluto in Aquarius highlights collective transformation, technological reinvention, and shifts in power structures. Uranus in Gemini disrupts and rewires the flow of information, sparking sudden insights and breakthroughs. Neptune in Aries ignites the imagination, rebirthing dreams and stoking the spirit, while Saturn standing beside Neptune adds discipline to the dream, structure to the vision, and the patience needed to turn inspiration into action. This remarkable New Moon is in very tight aspect to all three.
First, the Uranus square to the New Moon. Uranian squares rarely whisper; they loudly holler – disrupting patterns, breaking open what has grown stagnant, and delivering flashes of insight or sudden turns of events. Under this New Moon, Uranus acts like a lightning strike, illuminating where awareness is needed most and jolting us out of complacency. Radical changes or unexpected headlines may feel abrupt, yet they can serve as indicators of where deeper shifts are calling. Uranian jolts can be unsettling, but they also bring innovation and a reminder to engage life with more of our own unique brilliance, responding creatively to a global political network and ecosystem in dramatic flux.
Adding even more complexity, this New Moon sits at the focal point of a rare Yod configuration, with Pluto in Aquarius and Neptune conjunct Saturn in Aries. These outer planets are directing subtle, almost fated streams of energy toward the Sun and Moon. These influences feel embryonic, like archetypal seeds stirring beneath the surface, asking for new forms of clarity and care. Yods can be subtle and less overt, yet the focal expression point here being the New Moon itself invites us further into our somatic and emotional awareness. There may be a deep inner listening for where what is within us and aligning with our realm of influence needs more of our undivided attention and loving care.
Layered over all this is the striking fact that the Sun and Moon are the only major astrological points at this lunation in an Earth sign. One might expect grounding from Virgo, yet mutable earth behaves differently; it is like soil being tilled, loosened, and reorganized in preparation for what will be planted. With so little earth to stabilize the astrological currents, the sense of movement and flux only grows stronger, as we are treading on shifting terrain. This makes it essential to ask: what anchors us when the world offers so little solid ground? What practices, connections, or inner structures can we draw upon to keep us steady when everything is in motion?
And yet, amid these potent dynamics, there are gentler notes. Jupiter and Venus continue to travel through Cancer, a sign of nourishment, intimacy, and belonging. Though no longer tightly conjunct, their shared presence suggests that connection, warmth, and pleasure can provide sustenance now. Small joys, quiet meals, heartfelt exchanges, and the comfort of beauty may offer the resilience we need to stay grounded amidst so much challenge and change.
This New Moon may help us to plant seeds into this new landscape that is being created, carrying both promise and paradox. It asks how discernment can take shape amidst motion and how small, intentional choices can ripple outward in service to a larger whole. With Eclipse Season drawing near, there is an underlying invitation to trust in life’s wisdom, approaching the changing landscape with flexibility and openness, and also return to what roots us in presence. During these trying times, may we endeavor to stay true to what is ours to create and to tend, and remember to find glimmers of joy and connection as we can manage to discover them woven throughout.
