This August month – in the midst of a not-so-sleepy summertime of impactful change – possesses several factors of powerful transformation that are reminiscent of the volatile 1960s. This was when the society was trending in dangerous directions, also spurring an enthusiastic counter-cultural moment, nearly sixty years ago now, that yet still resonates with us today. And, notably, we have with us in the current astrological skies significant remnants of what was alive then, namely prominent Uranus and Pluto flavored by strong Saturn. As far as the Uranus presence, the recent Leo New Moon from July 28th featured a forming Mars-Uranus conjunction in Taurus, with also a partile or same-degree square to Uranus from Mercury in Leo. Pluto remains the focal planet of a close T-square with new planets Eris in Aries and Haumea in late Libra, and is contra-parallel to Makemake also, another new planet signifying connection to Nature, and natural law. Pluto is also closely contra-parallel to Venus in mid-Cancer. Meanwhile, Saturn, at 23 Aquarius in the New Moon configuration, chimes in with these, being sextile Eris in Aries, and exactly contra-parallel to Mars.
With the August 11th Full Moon in Aquarius, all these strong connections can be shown to gain additional momentum. Uranus, in particular, is squared by the Sun and Moon, so that surprises and unexpected revelations continue. Pluto too is still quite strong, and the Full Moon conjuncts Saturn. When we look around at our current headlines we also see a strong division, as there was in the sixties, between conservative and progressive forces. The struggle for what US presidential candidate Biden in 2020 famously called “the struggle for the soul of America” continues, with quite similar echoes throughout the world.
What do these outer planet considerations in the astrology of August have to do with each one of us individually ? Just like larger collectives such as countries, individuals also are being pulled in several directions all at once. With these current skies, both progressive and/or risky undertakings are on offer, as well as a more conservative approach of rejecting these by staying the course. And all this will magnify as we head into the fall months, when Uranus and Saturn are potently in conflict, and, ultimately, to the turning of the year into 2023. We all have our choices to make – and sometimes it will be right to swing for the fences, and sometimes to hold back. The biggest consideration however is not to give in to fear, but rather to do what we came into this earth to attempt, to strive to be our most authentic version of ourself that we can muster.
In this regard it is quite significant that we see the recent considerably enhanced presence of new Kuiper Belt planets Eris, Haumea, and Makemake. These are all about going to depth within the psyche, and in the case of Eris, for striving to respond to our deepest and most sincere values, to act upon these and nothing else, and to fight for them. Haumea and Makemake, with Makemake the more activist, similarly represent a call to recognize and celebrate “profound connection to Nature,” and to support concepts of natural law, of right action and right relationship, as we can come to these, to the extent that we can find them within ourselves. Because they are recently so prominent, Haumea in late Libra being in perfect square with Pluto, Makemake at 7 Libra being contra-parallel with Pluto and closely opposed by a stationing Jupiter at 8 Aries, we are all being summoned on the part of the universe to take a stand for our deepest values and to find within us our most righteous principled stance for moral behavior, even in the face of immorality on the part of others.
The words of Rudyard Kipling, writing in the early 20th century, and himself born with Haumea in close trine with Mercury-Mars, might inspire us today in the early 21st. He wrote:
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men (and women) count with you – but not too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a (hu)man, my daughter, my son!
